Oral Red Light Therapy Guide: How 660nm and 850nm Light Support Gum Health
An evidence-aware look at red light wavelengths for oral care, and what home-use gum devices can realistically deliver.

Red light therapy has moved from dermatology into oral care, with 660nm and 850nm wavelengths appearing in an increasing number of gum care devices. Here is what the technology can and cannot do.
How Red Light Works
Red and near-infrared light in the 600–850nm range is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria, increasing cellular ATP production. In dental tissue this is believed to support soft tissue recovery and reduce inflammation.
The Two Wavelengths and Their Uses
660nm — Deeper Red
660nm has a shallower penetration depth and is used primarily for surface-level soft tissue work. This is the more common wavelength in consumer gum care devices.
850nm — Near Infrared
850nm penetrates further, reaching the underlying tissue. It is used in clinical settings and appears in higher-end home devices.
What Home Devices Can Realistically Deliver
Consumer devices deliver significantly lower irradiance than clinical equipment. A credible home device should specify: - Irradiance in mW/cm² at the treatment distance - Wavelength tolerance - Treatment protocol and duration - Session frequency for meaningful results
Positioning Matters for Compliance
We do not market red light devices as treatments for periodontal disease. In most jurisdictions that constitutes a medical claim requiring regulatory clearance. The honest position is that these devices support a gum care routine alongside brushing and professional dental care.
Integration Into Private Label Programs
Red light gum devices pair naturally with whitening products in a single oral care portfolio. For brands combining a whitening kit with a gum care device, the messaging works better when positioned as a complete oral care routine rather than separate product claims.
